What in your opinion is the most important aspect of the new diplomacy?

The fact that citizens are now involved in most sensitive issues makes it the most important change in new diplomacy. Philosopher like Berridge, believe that public diplomacy is purely and simply the new term redefined for propaganda. It is acceptable in a sense that political leaders now use this to mobilize the mass audiences to attain an objective, in an electoral campaign or in a food company(advertising a dietetic product for example).

One of the reasons why I would say that public diplomacy is most important within new diplomacy is the fact that NGOs occupy a huge role in our society without forgetting that even if they do not have the right to vote at the UN they still have an influence on Governments as they tend to focus more on certain issues than someone working in a foreign ministry as they way they dedicate and spend their time investigating on issues, a foreign ministry officer, for example does not have that time because they are often busy dealing with so many issues at the same time.

The fact that human being grows its intelligence also develops by creating new features. The process of globalization is a key factor as today almost everyone has access to phones, internet that enables us to track important information such as EURONEWS, AFRICABLE, CNN, and BBC News and so on, not to mention the different movement of NGOs that we are all aware of, through either their website or other sources such as facebook.

Thank you

  1. Hi Camara, I have just read your draft which i find quite interesting in terms of information gathered. The only thing that i find confusing is that when you highlighted the importance aspects of the public diplomacy, you insisted that is used by political leaders for their own goals. Don't you think that public diplomacy is more about promoting the interest of a country in a different country as you mentionned early than promoting elction campaiging in case of Obama, Brown or Cameron?

  2. According to many books the same definition is given as you stated above. However, with consideration, it is worth mentioning the role that political leaders plas in our society using public diplomacy: the redefined name of Propaganda

  4. Hi Camara I find some of your points very interesting but some are very limiting especially where you mention about 'public diplomacy was recognised to promote the interests of a country in another country'. I would like to add that public diplomacy can be to promote the interests of people in their own country. Thank you

  5. @ Kana Thank you and @ Nyadzo, sister I just gave an example supposing that we(students) already know what public diplomacy means, especially given the fact that you have to promote your interests in your own country before going internationally. An example of this is like when you want to come to a better agreement with the WTO policies first, your administration sector at home has to be well structured in order to go to the next level. If one start to write this blog or explain every single details it will exceed the words limits which is 250. Nevertheless, I appreciate your comment.

  6. In relation augusin's comments,
public diplomacy can be used for many reasons including governments achiving their goals an example would be the multilateral diplomacy used by china to solve the North Korean Nuclear problem, china did this to improve their image within the international political community.
